Back-of-Book Indexing Rates

Indexers generally charge per indexable page.  Per-entry and hourly estimates are also available.

Factors affecting rates

Some of the factors that go into determining page rates include:

  • Density of material (number of index entries per page)
  • Number of indexable pages.
  • Is the book a “fast read” or densely filled with information?
  • Manuscript page size
  • Indexing method needed (standalone back-of-the-book)
  • Types of indexes needed (subject, name/author, title)
  • Subject matter and expected audience (trade, academic, professional, scientific/technical)
  • Are the pages the indexer receives the final page proofs or will there be changes to pagination while the book is being index?
  • Turnaround time

A sample of the text is needed for a more accurate estimate.

For stand-alone, back-of-the-book indexes, general rates are $1.80 to $3.25.
